New Cheap & Flimsy Design - collapses under its own weight (sad trombone) Pretty much the headline.These used to be good. But it looks like they redesigned the product to remove the wraparound cardboard edges and structural support - still standard on other brands.Imagine a thin layer of lint stuck to super-thin and bendy chicken wire, with some floppy strips of construction paper haphazardly glued around the outside by a passive-aggressively malfunctioning robot. It was like that. Hold it sideways and it folds under its own mass. Which isn't high. And isn't a good overall behavior for something that is supposed to hold its shape against strong airflow while horizontal.The outer dimensions were also larger than stated, it had to be intentionally creased to fit, which ended as you might expect.I don't want to say this product is a cynical anti-consumer cash grab, trading in on years of hard-fought brand equity for pennies of short term profit - but I tossed it, went out and got another brand with proper box-frame support.Might give this one a pass as presently designed.I gave it one star for the customer disdain that informed their redesign effort. 1Cutting corners?update on 7/16/17After one week's use, I found the filters I received in my recent order created more air restriction than the previous ones. My system uses a variable-speed fan. The fan has to run faster/louder on the filter in my recent order. Maybe 3M changed the material, maybe it's bad QC. Bottom line: these filters are not as good as they used to be.Below is the original post on 7/11/17Cutting corners?This is the 2nd time I order this filter. Though I was happy with my first purchase, I m disappointed this time, at least in terms of how they look. I m not sure whether 3M was cutting corners to save its production cost, or I received knock-off s from Amazon. If I had opened the package earlier, I would have returned it. Here are some details.In my recent order, I received 6 filters in one plastic bag. Though the edge of the filters is rigid, some pleats are bent, not straight and not parallel to each other. (In my previous order, it was 6 individually packed filters in a cardboard box. All pleats lined up nicely and straight.)In my recent order, the outside package says MPR 600 . But on the filter, it states MERV 7. (Please see the review picture by Mr. Schmo on Feb 03, 2017. I wish I had saw his review earlier!) Amazon's product description states MERV 8 (as of 7/11/17).I just started using one from the recent order. I ll have my fingers crossed that it would work as well as the previous ones, despite the appearance.1A good compromiseI have purchased this product from other vendors for several years, but as I'm having difficulty locating the 600 level in my local stores, I decided to purchase from Amazon to save time. There are many other filters with higher filtration numbers which seem to be marketed most heavily now. But some years ago, one of the consumer rating groups did a study to try to determine the sweet spot for filtration and airflow. Their concern was with how the filter impeded air flow and impacted a furnace. The 600 looked like a good compromise. It would be nice if the study would be repeated with today's higher efficiency furnaces. Thus, I purchase the 600 level and have been very happy with the filter. My furnace inspection company did say to change the filter every 2 months rather than every 3 recommended by the manufacturer.5The Perfect Filter For Most HVAC Residential Equipment; Heat Pump or Otherwise!Selecting an appropriate air filter for our Trane XV-95/16i HVAC system has been a challenge, in part due to differences of opinion from each HVAC company. In fact, even Trane was reluctant to provide specific performance metrics making it easy to select the right filter for our system-even when provided with the ducting specs and sq. footage of our home. I contacted 6 different HVAC contractors and received five different opinions. Two suggested purchasing the cheapest .59 cent filter, one an electrostatic filter, another suggested a custom-made electrostatic filter, one said to purchase a Filtrete Ultra (3M) and one contractor recommended experimenting with an assortment of filters-not exactly scientific nor did it engender any degree of confidence or credibility in these folks.After using other brand-name filters and discovering considerable lint and dust in our home, we used the Filtrete 600 MPR filter.Here is my assessment of its performance in our home:PROS:1. 3M manufactures outstanding filter media in a wide variety of performance metrics and applications. This particular "Dust and Pollen Filter" appears to strike the perfect compromise between protecting your HVAC equipment and fan motor by not restricting air flow through the system with doing a reasonably good job of cleaning the air.2. If you do your research, you will find that this particular 3M 600 MPR filter has the lowest pressure drop (at 0.14) of any 3M filter in the Filtrete line. This is an important metric which many other manufacturers do not disclose.3. Approx. 70% efficient compared with other filters in the 3M line but the best cost/benefit price points and bang for your buck.4. Good for a maximum of 90 days depending on usage and home environment. (See comment below)CONS/CAUTIONS:1. Since MERV and MPR are completely different metrics, all manufacturers of filter media should be required to provide equivalent indices TOGETHER on EACH filter to help consumers compare similar-performing filters across brands and manufacturers. For example, it would be useful for some consumers to know that a 600 MPR-rated filter is equivalent to a MERV rating of 8. The MPR metric was developed by 3M engineers to help demonstrate the advantage of 3M filters in capturing the smallest airborne particles-i.e. those from 0.3 to 1 micron in size. The MERV standard however, measures the ability of a filter to capture larger particles using a scale from 1-12. TMI !!!! Let's have just ONE valid and reliable standard which everyone can understand and use!2. The 90 day (3 month) replacement window is essentially a marketing strategy to increase sales through customer perception. The real truth is that filter longevity is affected by many variables including the use of tobacco, fireplace/wood-burning stove smoke, burning candles, construction projects in the home, sanding projects, pets and dirty duct work. If any of these conditions exist, filters should be replaced MONTHLY.BOTTOM LINE/SUGGESTIONS:1. This is an excellent filter dollar for dollar with acceptable metrics for performance, equipment protection and cost.2. Even without any of the above-cited "special conditions", I replace our filter monthly. I also leave our fan on "circulate", which runs the fan continuously and cleans the indoor air better. Of course the disadvantage here is that this requires us to swap out the filter more regularly.3. If you are inserting your filter vertically through a drop-down narrow, sheet-metal plenum, it is often difficult to retrieve the filter for replacement without mangling the filter frame. My suggestion is to spray a light film of lubricant (silicone or PAM) along each side of the paper frame. I also use two pieces of duct tape to help retrieve the filter from the narrow cavity.4. To determine when the filter needs to be changed, hold the filter up to an unobstructed light source. If you cannot see light through the filter, it should be changed regardless of time interval.I wish you all a happy and healthy home.5MERV 7 Rated, Just rightI was warned by my HVAC company that my standard Trane furnace would run best with a MERV 8 or lesser filter. The reason being that a filter greater than MERV 8 would have such a high resistance that it would prematurely wear out the blower and would decrease the effectiveness of my HVAC system. This particular 3M filter is rated MERV 7.The dimensions are correct and it fits well in my furnace. There is wire mesh reinforcement. It does a good job filtering.At this point in my life, I would rather pay a little more for a quality product that I know will perform well versus saving a few bucks on ill fitting, cheap, unreinforced and questionable Chinese filters. Bam. Done. Decision made.5Great filters for the price that do the job!As a former HVAC technician, I'd always recommended replacement filters to my customers and pass on the washable electrostatic ones. This brand and the 600 MPR rating is a good choice for most systems. When considering replacement every 3 months and cost, they're a good buy. For many systems, especially older equipment or central heat/air setups prone to problems, this is as much filtration as you'll want to use. The higher the number, the more air restriction you'll be dealing with. Yes, a 1000+ filter will catch more, but for most people, this filtration rating will work just fine and filter the most annoying particulate matter. On the flip side, stay away from the super cheap blue fiberglass filters. They truly filter nothing and are a waste of money. I've used the Filtrete 600 MPR filters for several years and have been very satisfied with the quality and filtration capabilities of this product.5product itself very good, but poor packaging of productThese filters showed up packed in 6 units with a thin plastic wrap. In a huge box about 1.5 times the size of the filters themselves. The filters are warped and somewhat smashed. Due to the packaging of this product I recommend you look elsewhere for these. I am certain that the Filtrete MPR600 filters themselves are excellent and work well per 3M specifications. However, again, due to the poor packaging I do not recommend these to some users. After all these filters are not exactly a cheap product - they can improve the packaging. In addition, once you remove the 6 filters from the plastic wrap you will need to find a clean place to store these - preferably in a card board box that will fit multiple filters to keep them straight and clean. I live in a hot climate and need to stock up on quite a few of these, but would rather use something else due to the packaging. If it matters to you, the filters themselves are NOT individually wrapped.3Howler monkey falsely advertisesUpdate: star-rating unchanged. 3 days after installing one of these, it howls in a really annoying pitch. Howling stops if I push on it slightly. No howler monkey in the furnace for me. Returning these headache causers.The frame is thicker than average so it was a bit of a tight squeeze to shove it into the slot. Three stars lost for cheating. I was comparing MERV 8 filters when I purchased these. This filter was specified in the description as a MERV 8 filter. That is a performance rating. The 16x20x1 filters that arrived today are marked MERV 7. 7 is not 8. Bye-bye 3 stars. Hello 2 stars for false advertising. The same level MPR600 rating is also on a different 3m filtrete filter product that does have a merv rating of 8. This one doesn t in 16x20x1.2Good Filters at the right balance of cost/filtering for most people...with one word of caution.EDIT 7/6/2016: 3M is now shipping these with a flimsy cardboard frame that does not stand up to my furnace blower. After two weeks these filters bow out of shape to the point that the air flows around them and they are useless. I contacted 3M and they told me they will no longer manufacture these with the box frame that WORKS. They were only willling to send me more of these useless filters. I have used 3M filters forever, but I won't buy this cheap garbage again. They may be the best filter out there but it's no good to me if the frame doesn't hold out. They may work for you if you have a weaker fan or in a smaller size. Beware though so you don't waste your money. I'll be looking for another type/brand.Who wants to buy air filters one at a time? No one. Buy a box of these and head off the extra trips to the home improvement store. These seem to be the right balance between floss fiberglass filters and the heavier pleated filters that crank up your furnace fan just by putting them in.If you have specific needs for heavy filtration, then you may not have a choice but if you don't and you're looking for something to keep down the dust and make your indoor air a little cleaner this is the deal. The price is reasonable too, especially compared to the higher MPR filters that get into the stratosphere.One word of advice, if you get these filters look closely at the cardboard frame around the outside. If they are a box frame around the edges, which is what you would expect to find traditionally then you're good. Those are sturdy and will hold up to a strong furnace fan and humidity and time. However, if you pull out that first filter and the frame is basically folded-over cardboard, send them back. The previous box I ordered, same type and from Amazon had the folded over cardboard frame. These did NOT hold up the way the framed filters did. When I went to replace the first one the frame was bent down and pulled toward the fan, creating a bent filter that probably stopped working the day it created that opening in the airflow. Figuring this may be a one-off, on the next filter I checked within the first month. Same problem. In order to save cost, 3M went cheap on the frame for a time. Between my high-speed fan and perhaps the humidity level the cardboard had sagged and pulled out of its receptacle in the furnace. I suffered my way through this box and got another one. This last box I ordered saw 3M had returned to the full box frame. Much better folks.1Product information is incorrect...Purchased based on the product information and reviews stating it has a MERV 8 rating... Not sure if different sizes have different MERV ratings, but the 16x20x1 actually has a MERV 7 rating. Could've saved $20 and went with the MPR 300 which claims to have a MERV 7 rating. Wish I would've caught this before using one.2Great for winter, helps with energy savingsThe energy audit team who came to our house last fall recommended this MERV/MPR level of furnace filter. They said it prevents the furnace from having to work too hard, which saves money on energy. I had been using one of the higher level, more expensive filters, thinking it was keeping the air cleaner but I thought I would give these a try over the winter. They have worked great and the savings are real. First of the filters themselves cost less than the higher level filters, and second of all, I kid you not, the utility bill is down about $50.00/month. To be clear, we made several changes from the energy audit so it's all of those things together PLUS this El Nino winter that are causing the utility bill to go down. But for now I have seen no downsides to these filters and am glad I tried them. We'll have to see what happens in the spring when there's more pollen in the air. At that point I will assess our household members' spring allergy responses and judge if we should switch to a higher level filter.5
