Customer Reviews

Pocket sized and does what it's supposed to!Writes like it's supposed to and is the perfect size for carrying in any pocket, though I prefer the front pocket. I actually prefer this to the original bullet for a couple reasons:1) it's smaller by 1/4" when closed and 1/2" when open for use.2) I like the flat top look compared to the rounded bullet.Reason it gets 4 stars is because the price is a little high for someone who loses it at least once per year. See pictures for size difference.4Write any angle! Colors availableI love my space pens!!! I have 3 so far. I really like this style and the "bullets" I have a purple one of those. I have also bought the replacement colored inks. I love that they write very smooth. I can write on the wall. Which actually comes in handy at work when comparing lists on my fridge. Much easier to do on the fridge and not from 4ft away in the table. It's super durable! I've dropped them more than once. No marks! Blows my mind. Very very worth the price! Love them!5It falls apart. The cap gets stuck.I own several Space Pens and I wouldn't be without one. I am a writer and I must have a pen at all times, including lying on my back in bed. One frustration with other models is the lack of a clip so I was delighted to see this on and at first I liked it al lot. Then the barrel to the inside of the pen began falling off exposing the refill. I tried pushing it on with greater force and this made it worse. Finally in frustration I super-glued it on and sure enough it stays. However, now it is a throw away after one cartridge runs out. Then the cap began to get seriously stuck on the end opposite the nib when writing (I swear I did not push it hard). On one occasion I had to use two pair of pliers to get it of so now the surface is marred. The pen writes as it is supposed to but I will not be buying another one like this and cannot recommend it. I am thinking of buying the secondary market clip for the 400 series pens but the negative reviews are daunting.2Best EDC pen - here's why, and why the O-ring is not a problemBuy this one even if it's EDC and you never intend to use the clip. Space pens are the most reliable pen you can buy at any price. Same refill as any other space pen, so forget any comments about poor writing quality. You could get a bad refill (not likely), but that could happen to any of the line. They are made in Germany and pressure-sealed to assure consistent ink flow. X-Mark comes with a medium point and I prefer the fine, so I always have a few unused refills around. Ordering a few refills wouldn't hurt just to make sure you always have a working version in your pocket. They don't give up prematurely. If it works when you put it in your pocket, it will work when you need it. And the ink lasts way longer than a standard penThis is the best EDC version for pocket carry for 2 reasons.1. The clip keeps the pen from rolling away. You put it down and it stays there.2. Being shorter, it vanishes in your pocket, yet the writing length (cap on back) is basically the same because the non-clip versions end is above where you hold the pen, so it adds no value, other than making the pen longer in your pocket.3. It has all the virtues of any Space Pen. It will not let you down. Forget to cap it? No problem. Let it sit for a year. No problem. Need to write on a vertical surface, no problem.. Wet surface? No problem. As to O-rings: The last few X-Marks I bought (I sometimes leave them on the plane, or give them to people who like what they see) have had not O-ring problems at all. The cap goes on firmly, stays put, and never falls off unintentionally. I believe the problem is solved, but if you happen to love the pen, but the O-ring isn't working for you, the solution is as close as Amazon or your local hardware store: 010 O-Ring - very common size.010 aerospace o-ring fixes Fisher x-mark cap 1/4" inside diameter (3/8" outside diameter) x 1/16" wall. Nitrile Rubber - Buna N or Viton VITON best5Fix for loose cap - Now a great penI was looking for a small pen to carry clipped to the inside of my front pants pocket. The size and shape of this pen are exactly what I was looking for. It is nice and small when in "capped mode" and when the cap is removed and placed on the end for "writing mode" it is the perfect length. The pen feels solid in the hand and writes very smooth.BUT, as others have mentioned, the o-ring friction fit for the cap when in "capped mode" is surprisingly poor. The cap barely stayed on and I often found the cap clipped to my pocket and the business end of the pen lying in the bottom of my pocket. This was almost a deal breaker for me as I was afraid that I would eventually lose the pen altogether. I had hoped that other reviewers were exaggerating this loose cap issue but I found it to be true.Until I found a simple fix. I went to my local big box hardware store and bought a 2-pack of rubber o-rings for .79 . Now it's perfect! Buy the following size o-ring: 1/4" inside diameter (3/8" outside diameter) x 1/16" wall. Remove the original o-ring and install one of these babies. You will need to work it into the groove so that it is fully seated and not bulging out. You will see what I mean when you install it. With this new o-ring the pen fits nice and snug. 30 seconds invested....After this fix the pen is a 10/10 for my EDC purposes. I can't imagine why Fisher would let these pens through their QC with such a loose fitting cap. If you are willing to do this fix I would recommend this pen without reservation. If it wasn't for the hassle of needing to fix it myself it would undoubtedly be a 5 star review.4Nice EDC pen I had the Trekker for nearly two years. The cap of the Trekker was really tight, but one day I went for my pen and it was gone. I probably didn't recap it properly, because there is no way that thing could just fall off with as tight as the cap was. I liked having a keychain pen, but I didn't want to lose another $20 pen, so I ordered the X-Mark. The matte black coating creates a nice grip, and I haven't had the O-ring problems that others have had. The cap doesn't have a super tight fit like the Trekker, but it the pen has yet to fall out, though I pretty much only keep it in my pocket. As others have mentioned, the refill does move around a little bit while writing, but it isn't something that bothers me. I also took out the medium refill and put in the smoother, less clumpy fine refill. Perfect for me. 5Cap is very loose - O-ring too smallI've purchased a bunch of Fisher Space Pens over the years. I think I still have my original chrome bullet pen that I've "retired" from daily use, mainly because of sentimental reasons. This is the first time I purchased this version of the bullet pen with the flat end on the cap. As others have stated, the cap itself is very loose and doesn't stay on the pen very well. I can see it easily being lost. So, I noticed a few reviews where the customer replaced the O-ring with one that has these measurements: 3/8" outside diameter x 1/4" inside diameter x 1/16" width. I went to Lowe's and picked some up. Replaced the one that came with the pen and now the cap fits perfectly, nice and snug without being too tight. Love these pens but I'm knocking off 2 stars for poor quality control. Fisher either used the wrong O-ring accidentally or (more likely) some bean counter figured they could save the company a whole $30/year by using cheaper, mis-sized ones.3Glad I own one Fisher pen, but one is enoughIn closed form, this pen is pleasingly tiny (easy to slip into a pocket or purse) just over 3.5" but also easy to lose in the couch. It's surprisingly heavy (which I consider a negative), and the body is actually a little on the slim side (compared to conventional ballpoints). These factors make it slightly less comfortable to hold and use at least at first. (I think the benefits outweigh the drawbacks, but it's discouraged me from buying a potentially heavier model, like the original AG7 or CH4.)The description of a "squared off" cap is slightly misleading. I imagined the top of the cap would be rectangular when viewed straight-on (to keep the pen from rolling). It's circular. Like you took the bullet pen (which is symmetrical at both ends) and sliced off the tip. The clip will still keep it from rolling. Some reviews also describe Fisher pens as a little "stiff;" requiring a little more force or effort to write with. I haven't experienced that at all; the writing sensation is comparable to other ballpoints. The thing you'll get hooked on is the consistency of the writing experience. Your first stroke is 98% as clear and dark as words written mid-page.As for the look of the ink, it's splitting hairs to say there's much difference from a decent conventional ballpoint (but the Fisher goes down slightly blacker). All in all, I'm glad I have one. It's handy for writing in bed, or writing vertically against a wall. Your Fisher is "never gonna let you down," but it's not so marvelous that I desire different body styles for different occasions.4Not as good as they used to be I used to love these as a kid and I had one just like this for recording watch logs in the nuclear Navy, but this last one is disappointing. For occasional use like signatures on legal documents, which is really all I use a pen for nowadays, it just doesn t perform well. It often goes dry for no apparent reason, even though it hasn t been used for a full page of writing. I don t know if the quality has gone down in recent years or if it s just not suited to occasional use, but I can no longer recommend this product. 2Small, compact, and always writesI was looking for a compact pen that was reliable, and I've found it.======================PROs:-Takes up minimal pocket space If you're into edc, this is the pen for you. You'll forget it's even in your pocket.-Always writes They are used by NASA for a reason. If it has ink, it'll write.-Feels like a regular pen Once you put the cap on the back of the pen it feels like any other pen. The weight is nice.-Conversation starter You can show all your friends and co-workers the pen that astronauts use, they'll immediately know you're cool.----CONs:-Your friends might try to steal it I'm not saying they'll do it on purpose, but they might. It'll feel really nice in their hands too.----It's a solid pen. After using mine a few times my girlfriend bought herself one to keep in her purse. Hers is pink.5Wrong item! (Updated: Right item is meh)This is what I got, the entirely wrong item. The "Military Pen" which is a clicking pen, and it 2 inches longer than the X-Mark Bullet I was supposed to get! Sending it back! Get it right next time!UPDATE : Utterly surprised considering my and other people's experiences, but the replacement I got sent was the right item! So, reviewing the proper item: eh, I like the size of it. Works perfect in my EDC pouch! The Fisher space ink is ok, but I'll probably replace the medium point it comes with with fine point. And yep, just like other people have said, the cap just falls right off. I got the #5 O-ring others recommend at Home Depot and replaced what it came with... Pro Tip: After putting on the new ring, press it into the groove by rolling it firmly back and forth on a table. Then the cap will fit on perfectly! Otherwise it's just loose enough that when you try to put the cap over it, the edge of the cap clips the ring and pulls on it.So, I'll go ahead and bump up from 1 to 3 stars. Even if the original mistaken item is entirely Amazon's fault, for as much as this pen costs you REALLY shouldn't have to be doing your own upgrades to it!!3If you like the pen, it'll cost you 79 more! (I did)5 star if they used the o ring that everyone says (and are absolutely right) the thing needs. My classic bullet pen grew legs and walked off at work, go figure, the thing is awesome. Really loving the flat black look though, super cool. Follow the other reviewers though and be ready to get the thing a new o ring. Cmon, space pen! The o ring?? Ha. Well anyhoos, you can fix the thing in 1 minute. Just get the new o ring, pinch the old one and use your other finger to roll it right off. Roll new one on and it's snug as a bug. Also recommended, throw away the old ring because it's worthless.4
