Customer Reviews

Not what it says it is. Get a new toilet seat.I got this to replace the worn out pins on my very expensive Kohler slow-closing seat. The left pin did not fit at all and I had to use the original old right one on the left side to make it work. The instructions may as well have been written in invisible ink. They were barely legible. I am a handy person and this was a frustrating task. I only chose to repair this as the lid was around $40 new. Well, a non-Kohler elongated soft-closing toilet seat was available for about $20 at Walmart. Wish I hadn't ordered this for close to the came cost.1Failed after two daysBroke in two days! I installed per instructions. Fit perfect worked great, failed after two days. The dampers that keep the lid from slamming failed and the lid slams shut now. I wish I had kept the old dampers from my old hinge they still worked. I had to replace it because the plastic clip that holds the seat on to the toilet broke after my son jumped on it. (Yeah he is 14 don't ask!)But the dampers were still fine after 5 years. I already tossed the old part (Next day was garbage day , go figure). But for $25 I should get more than two days. I guess I can try and contact Kohler to see if they can help but I don't want to pay more money on this thing!1Kohler toilet hingeI installed the hinge twice and the pins slipped back and allowed the top portion of the seat to come undone. I called Kohler and the lady advised that the pins should snap in place. I did not find this to happen, so I put two pieces of plumbers' pipe foam inside the u-hinge. This has worked perfectly (wish that I could patent this!). I'm surprised that the "keepers" on the grey cover (not included with kit) don't fit closer to the pins to keep them in place.4Perfect fit, but a little manufacturing quality problem with the flashingI was looking at replacing a compete toilet seat to fix the soft close feature failing. Glad I found this instead. It's a perfect replacement for the Kohler Serif Model K-4608. I'd seen Kohler's replacement video already, so I had an idea of what to do. I expected it'd take maybe 5 or 10 minutes. Didn't turn out that way because one of the holes wasn't completely clean, so the hinge wouldn't push through. I needed to scrape out the plastic flashing residue at the end of a hole (see picture). Couldn't get a Dremel grinder in there, so ended up spending most of the time scraping with an Exacto blade. Of course, I could have used the old part. Heck, for that matter I could have gotten away with just replacing the hinges. But doggone, I paid for them, so I'll use all the new dang parts.4The small dampers don t last terribly long, but are so nice to have.Like other reviews, the enclosed instructions for this are way too complicated. Installation is very simple if you don t fiddle w/ anything first. ie: Don t take it out of the box and start pulling parts out or open and close it. Just remove the old seat and lid in the closed position. Place them upside down on a towel or something that won t scratch the plastic surface. Pop off the plastic cover from the old hinge and use some small needle nose pliers to pull back on the existing hinge pin, which should release the hinge from the seat and lid. Then remove the same cover plate on the new hinge, place it into the gap, and push the new hinge pins into the Rt and Lt side. This can be done w/ finger or a small screwdriver. Snap the new cover plate on the base, (this holds the hinge pins in place), and you re done. Takes less than 5 mins. Your soft close seat should work like new. Easy, peasy!5Instructions are awful The replacement works, no thanks to the instructions.Step 3 says "Place your thumbs over the slots in the hinge assembly, then pull up on the bottom cover for removal"What it means is "Pry off the gray bottom cover". I used a small knife and my thumbs were really not involved.Later it has you reinstall the old dampers in the new hinge, although you probably bought this to get new dampers. Then it says "ensure the right and left dampers (stamped on the end of each damper)..." NOT - there are no markings on the dampers. You need to be sure the grooves are lined up properly.Anyway. It seems to work ok now. It would have been nice to only buy the dampers. 3Color difference minimal. Don't "help" your seat to close. This white hinge kit was much better priced than the bisque color of my original toilet seat. The difference in color is so slight and it is relatively hidden, so I don't even notice it unless I really search. I wish Kohler would just sell replacement dampers, since those are the parts that fail. I thought of "harvesting" the dampers out of this assembly and "transplanting" them into my original hinge (Indeed, I initially tried this approach), but the receiving holes for these dampers has been re-designed, so I had to use the whole kit.One important lesson I learned while researching how to fix my "no-longer-slow-closing" toilet seat: Don't try to "help" your toilet seat close. It stresses the dampers and shortens their lives. Rather, let the dampers do their thing and just walk away after the slightest nudge to get them started.5Had to modify it This is great since it fixed my $50 soft close toilet seat for less than a new one. The only downside is they changed the mechanism a bit, and I had to put some spacers in to keep it from coming apart. The soft close dampers in my seat were a bit longer, and the cover for the assembly (which is not included) is what holds the dampers in place. Since my old ones were longer, the new shorter ones would slowly work themselves inward, and eventually the seat lid would come off. I resolved this by putting some plastic spacers next to the dampers to prevent them from doing this. 4Needs revising to make it workThis has been a disappointment so far. The hinge pins keep disengaging from the seat lid and it comes apart. This is annoying and completely unsafe. I've had to modify this part by taping two hex nuts to the grey plastic cover to fill in the void that allows to hinge pins to keep backing out and disengaging from the toilet seat lid. Not sure why the grey plastic cover doesn't have the molded tabs closer to the hinge pins to keep them from backing out.2Right part, right fit, lousy directionsIf you are like me you took your old one apart and found that one of the dampers was broken. I tried everywhere to find the just the dampers and couldn't. I had to buy this whole kit. Oh well, it's a good kit and fit perfectly it just has far more parts than I really needed. The instructions are lousy. Here's the simple way. Pry up the two white plastic covers covering the bolts to the toilet seat. Don't remove the bolts just pull the seat forward and the hinge unclips from the bolts (the plastic covers prevent it from sliding forward when you're sitting on it). Remove the seat and flip it over. Forget about using your thumbs just use a screwdriver to pry off the gray cover (it also holds the dampers in place once it's back on). Slide each damper out toward the middle of the hinge with needle nose pliers. The hinge now comes off. Replace it with the new one assembling in reverse order. Forget about looking for the right and left stamping on the end of the dampers, it doesn't exist. Instead the dampers have different slot arrangements that only align with the grooves in the hinge when they are on their correct side respectively. Just keep playing with them until they slide in easily. Don't force them. Once they are in slide them toward the center of the hinge. Place the hinge back on the seat and push the dampers outwards into the slots on the seat. Reinstall the gray cover. It has extensions that hold the dampers in place. Slide the seat back on to the bolts and reinstall the white covers. Its really simple and fast once you know not to waste time with the included confusing instructions. It took longer to type this than the actual job took. BTW our seat failed in less than 3 years in a 3 person household. For $65 it should have lasted longer then that or there should be a cheaper way to get repair parts. If a damper fails again and I can't find just that part, I'll replace it with a different manufacturer. 4 stars because of the lousy directions but the part was perfect.4Pretty good product. Works for both round and elongated seats. If you haven't used a quiet-close toilet seat, you owe it to yourself to do so. When we moved into our new house several years ago they had a quiet-close seat already installed. I had never seen one before and absolutely love it. However, the hinge recently failed, so I did some research to find a replacement. After looking at several complete seat options, I decided to keep the existing seat and purchase this replacement hinge.I'm generally happy with that decision, but can't quite give 5 stars, due to a couple of the cons listed below that I trust will be helpful to potential shoppers.(Incidentally, despite the product name on Amazon, this works for the round Kohler seat as well as the elongated one.)Pros:- perfect fit with my existing seat- easy to install (took about 2 minutes)- good color match to existing seat- comes with the quick disconnect feature for cleaning, which my prior hinge did not have- good repair option for less than $20, rather than having to purchase a whole new seatCons:- not the greatest instructions; in fact, the included instructions seem to relate to a slightly different product; this annoyance is tempered by the fact that it is pretty easy to install, so it is not a big deal, but still a minor annoyance for those who might wonder how to install it- the biggest misstep is that the replacement hinge did not come with bolts and nuts for installation; the new quick disconnect mount is great, but it has a specific space for the bolt head to rest that did not quite fit my prior bolt; I made it work with my old bolts and nuts, but it would have been much better for Kohler to throw in a couple of bolts and nuts that are designed specifically to fit the quick disconnect mount- it would be great if Kohler would sell the just the dampers for a reasonable price; it is unnecessary and a waste of material to have to buy the whole hinge mount, when all I needed was a single replacement damper- when opening the seat to the vertical position, the hinge is a bit tempermental as to whether it is going to let the seat stay up or whether it will start closing on you when you are urinating; by holding the seat upright for a couple of seconds after opening, the damper seems to relax and accept the fact that you want the seat upright; this problem might go away over time as the damper is broken in, but it is a known issue that should be resolved4Economical way to fix a Kohler Toilet Seat Broken Hinge Hinge broke on a fairly new Kohler toilet, thought I would have yo replace the entire seat. Kohler did a great job in designing this system. Their system allows yo to buy the part that breaks most frequently and replace just that part, the hinge. Probably didn't take more than 15 minutes total to remove the old seat and replace the new hinge assembly. Works, just like new. Found about this product by accident when searching YouTube on replacement seats for this model toilet. 5Not as difficult as I thought it would beLike several other people that rated this item, I was disappointed to find out that you could not simply purchase replacement dampers from Kohler rather than the entire sub-assembly but that does not impact my thoughts on the unit itself. I found the parts well constructed and rather simple to install (unlike several other individuals). The only tools required where a screwdriver (either flat or Phillips) and needle nose pliers (smaller work better but not too small: you need to be able to apply a decent amount of pressure to pull out the old dampers). Two additional pieces of advice:1. When removing the broken damper, be sure to remove all of the broken pieces as some may have broken off inside the seat itself and may not simply fall out upon removal. You won't be able to insert the new damper until all of the broken pieces are removed.2. If I had to do it again (and hadn't already recycled the old pieces) I would simply replace the one broken damper (the sub-assembly includes both) and keep the other damper as a spare on the off chance that it breaks in the future (the dampers are marked 'L' and 'R' and are not interchangeable).4
