Shouldn't have so many bad reviews
I was hesitant to but this after reading the reviews here on Amazon, but I'm glad I did!It is super easy to set the clock and timers. No, it's not as easy as a manual egg timer, but it is as easy as any digital timer I've used. You CAN stop the timer once you've started it.You CAN pause the timer. You CAN set a sound at the beginning, at the switch from green to yellow, and at the end. It makes a non optional beep when it switches from yellow to red. That is the only thing I would change about it.My daughter loves it and its helping her to learn time awareness.
5The Poor Reviews Are True, I Thought Others Were Just Unfortunate - Not The Case!
I purchased this timer for my classroom as a visual and audio timer for when students have a 15 minute break. I'm currently teaching summer school so put it to use right away this past week. First "two" days it worked great! Went into school today and green light was locked on, yet I never start the timer. As it continued to count down, it never sounded when green turned to yellow. From the yellow, it never turned red when there was 1 minute left, as I set the timer to do two days ago (through manual timer mode). After this occurred, I was unable to reset the timer accordingly. Not due to user confusion, rather defect in product. I had read the reviews and felt I could handle the comments that it's complicated to set controls. That part was fine. However, the comments about it breaking or not being a reliable product are true. I had to find out for myself. Please if you're wondering if you should purchase this, listen to this comment and the others that it's not a great product. The concept is great (which is the reason I gave it any stars at all) in that the product visually shows the time is decreasing as the colors change and I was psyched to have it in my classroom. Too bad there is something in the programming of this devise that causes it to just fail for no good reason. Buyer beware!!!
2So Far it's Perfect!
So far so good. Used twice and already a help. Despite the low rating I ordered this for my just turned 3 SPD little. It was our first time using a timer for transitions and I thought it would be a great one to start with. He loves colors and in order for him to "get it", I figured colors would help. He has recently has some big changes and his anxiety has become so bad. I have used twice. Once for transitioning through morning routines and before nap. I reinforced green means go (let's play), yellow for clean up or almost all done (depending on the pace he needed to get used to the idea of next step). Red for all done/clean up. After it lights red it for the time it then sounds an alarm turning all lights off. This will make me use the red light time for clean up. Since it was our first time using it I gently reinforce these ideas every couple minutes just to draw his attention to it. At the end he did kind of say I wanted to go back green and that he wasn't ready. And so the first time using it he seemed to begrudgingly move through the transitions but he did so with no crying! I anticipate that it will only get easier once he fully understands and it gets part of our routine.Gave 4 stars due to the product itself being (so far) amazing and perfect for use, however, it does not come with a power cord? Really? For $30 and the fact it has this capability, include the damn cord. The fact that you don't include the cord draws attention to the fact that, while this is probably perfectly legal and as far as big business goes, it's another way to take our money, it's just shiesty.
The other poor reviews are spot on. Build quality is poor. We bought the power adapter to go along with the timer. The adapter does not fit securely in the timer. I think the internal power port is broken as it flexes quite a bit. On top of that, every time it is plugged in it resets the entire timer. Without the power adapter we were going through batteries about once every two weeks and it is only used twice a day. Really disappointed with the quality for the price.
2Have bought at least 5 of these
I just ordered our seventh Time Tracker - we station one in several rooms of the house, so we have 4 or 5 available at all times. We've used them for several years with our children who have ADHD, but I found it is even helpful for me as well as our children who do not have ADHD. We use them to prevent dawdling in the bathroom (with 4 teens - 3 are girls - this is a MUST!), to encourage finishing chores and schoolwork without me having to nag, to keep time from slipping away at breakfast & lunch, and it is perfect to use with housekeeping management systems that use 15min increments to perform the small tasks most people avoid, like cleaning out the junk drawer. My children have all responded well to the timer, especially when it is paired with a reward (for example: "Finish folding the towels and washcloths before the timer is done and you may earn TV/computer/texting time." For schoolwork, I break the tasks down into 15min increments. For example, my child might have to write 10 definitions & show them to me before the timer announces, "Times up!" We started using Time Trackers when my children ranged between 3 & 10 years old.Since setting the timer is a bit complicated, I set it for 15 min on AUTO & 30 min on MANUAL and I never, ever reset the times. Almost everything we do can be broken down into one of those time frames. I try to make sure to change the batteries before they completely die so I don't have to go through resetting it. I write the manual settings in the owner's manual, and all our timers are set up exactly the same.A couple of the timers have not worked & I had to get replacements, but it was fast & easy through Amazon. The replacements worked well. Thankfully, we use them so often that it was quickly apparent that they were defective. If it was easier to set and more reliable, it would get 5 stars!
4"Almost perfect...but not quite."
To steal a line from Shel Silverstein, this timer is almost perfect but not quite. I used this time tracker in my classroom before and it was great for helping the students monitor how much time is left during whatever activity I was having them do. After quitting my job, I bought one for my home to help my daughter with bath time, getting ready for bed, etc. It's not difficult to use and I like being able to use the manual setting to customize the time spent on each color and what sounds, if any, I want to accompany it. My only complaint is that you cannot store multiple times. For example, under the manual option, I set up the timer for 15 minutes and customized it to my liking. That's it; I can't customize any other time unless I get rid of the previous settings. Same thing goes under the auto option. Would be a 5-star item were it not for that problem.
4Timer compicated to set, but worth it
First one sent: the timer/clock worked, but the lights and sounds did not. Returned and reordered. New one arrived in just a couple of days and it works perfectly in the one day we have had it. My son is autistic and responds well to visual cues so I decided to purchase this to help him organize his time better. He loves it. He kept running over to check how much time was left on the display. When it changed colors he became so excited. Very cute. My only gripe is that it is pretty complicated to figure out. I did it without the instructions, so it wasn't impossible, but it still is complicated. I do like that each stage (green, yellow, red) can be programmed in hours, minutes and seconds individually. So if I want my son to read for 20 minutes I can set it on green for 15 min and 30 seconds, than yellow for 4 min 30 seconds, and then red for just 10 seconds. If I have problems in the future I will update this post.
4Good but Frustrating Menu System
It does what you need and has enough features. What's frustrating to no end is the menu system. It's very unintuitive and at the moment you need it, and are already frustrated, you have to try and do what seems like a brain teaser to get the darn thing to go!Sure after a couple months of owning it and using it you get it figured out but honestly it doesn't need to be that difficult. They really should have made a configuration where you can setup a 'one touch timer' so you setup all the features you want (like when each light comes on, total time, etc) then assign that as your 'one touch timer' so you can just grab it, hit the button, and it starts. Now I can do it in my sleep but it took a while to memorize it =PMENU > RIGHT ARROW > SELECT > STARTI mean... why do I need to SELECT it?! Just start when I hit start! That extra step is totally unnecessary and indicative of how unintuitive the whole system is. Took me a half hour to get the darn thing initially setup. Even putting in all the batteries was quite the challenge!Once it's all setup it's nice; just wish it was easier to use. Oh... it's durable too. I don't know how m any times I've been.. rough.. .with it out of frustration.
3Huge help keeping my son on task!
I bought this to help my son keep track of time while getting ready for bed & for school. Other reviews said it was difficult to program. Not sure what they found difficult but my 7yo & I can both program it with ease. Now we have no arguments (okay, FEWER arguments! It isn't a miracle machine!) when he is set up with his tasks. He knows he needs to beat the timer to get his free time. He even sets it to remind himself how much free time he is allowed before he needs to leave for the bus! The visual reminder of the colored lights combined with the option of an auditory signal ensure that he stays on task. I wish we had gotten this style timer years ago!
5its a GEM!!!!!
So I bought this item for my 2 year old with the hopes that it would help with bed time. when I would brush her teeth at night it was usually time for bed right away so she was associating brushing teeth with bed time and we went a good four days without brushing her teeth so I went to the web to find some sort of timer. I happend upon this GEM! the product is slightly different than the picture, in that, the screen is on the top of the timer not on the bottom. it has two different types of settings but the one I most utilize is "manual timer" where i can set how many min. each color may be.Green for 20 minYellow for 20 minRed for 20 minthen it sounds and turns off, which indicates bedtime. I have a smart two year old but she is also stubborn which is why I was PLEASANTLY surprised when after day two of using it she understood what it meant and she was actually happy to go brush her teeth when it turned yellow.its portable and WORKS!!!!
