Customer Reviews

Great bag!Excellent quality nut milk bag. I have only been using it to make cold brew coffee, but this thing is amazing! It is very durable and at first I was afraid to sqeeze it even a little to get the concentrated coffee at once I've done a batch of cold brew. However there is nothing to fear here, even with moderate pressure on it this thing is solid! With that being said I'm sure it will be just a useful for making nut milk or filtering anything else food/beverage related. 5Love the Nut-Milk BagWe make our own Soy milk and almond milk and this bag is an excellent way to filter the milk. Don't know how I did it before! We used to use cheese cloth but it was messy and much more difficult to use. This bag makes it so much easier! And it is easy to clean and dries quickly! (just make sure to use it with the seam side out for easy cleaning) I also use it for making tofu rather than cheese cloth. I love that it fits around a bowl with ease and the draw strings at the top make it convenient to hang the bag over my milk bowl to let it continue to cool and drip until it is cool enough to handle--at which point I squeeze the bag to get out the rest of the soy milk. (Soy milk is heated so it is too hot to handle at first. Almond milk is not so you can just squeeze the milk out right away.) Love this Nut-Milk bag! 5Pretty goodSo I bought this bag in May 2013. It's now Nov 2013 and the bag is now loosing integrity to the point that I need to buy another bag. This was my first nut bag after getting sick of cheesecloth, so I can't compare to other nut bags. I think overall this nut bag has worked very well for me. I make nut milk about every 2-3 days, so that is a LOT of straining in 6 months. The bag is easy to clean after each use, just rinse out all the pulp, squirt it with a little soap, rinse and hang to dry. The bag itself doesn't strain as well as cheesecloth, and so with my go to hemp milk, even with first use of this bag there is some "sediment" that gets through. This hasn't bothered me since the small amount of texture doesn't faze me. Now that I'm considering new bags however, I may try something new just to see if I can get a finer straining bag. Overall though, it is a good, easy to clean and convenient nut bag.Update 12/11/13: I have now purchased a second nut bag which has much finer straining capabilities though not the convenient shape of this bag. Since fine straining is more important than shape, I won't be purchasing this particular bag again. For those that are interested my new bag is "#1 Rated Nut Milk Bag" sold by Zimtal. 4Does not filter lots of coffee silt and particulate.I bought this hoping it would streamline my cold-brewed coffee making process, which involves filtering a large amount of grounds and fine silt out of ~30 oz of coffee. It has failed in this. It would be ideal, but it doesn't filter out a lot of the finer particulate. This is not an ok, French press-type amount of particulate. When it settled a few days later it left a half inch thick layer of coffee dust mixture in the bottom of my jug. I am disappointed. If you have a very coarse grind and little dust generation, it may work for you. I have to go through a second filtering step, which is a pain and only barely better than before I owned this.If you do buy it, remember to flip it so that the seams are on the outside, away from the filtered solids. 2Pulp still seeps throughPrior to this purchase i was using a cotton organic produce bag to strain my almond milk. My curiosity got me to purchase this nut milk bag. From my experiences using it in the past two weeks, it does not strain as well as my cotton counterpart. I am left with pulp in the milk. After straining through this nut milk bag, I strained the milk a second time through the cotton bag. More pulp was left behind, leaving a cleaner milk that i much prefer so I have opted to send this bag back. The cotton bag takes a little longer to strain through then the nut milk bag but I don't get any pulp in the milk. If you don't mind pulpy milk then this nut milk bag works ok, but in my opinion it did not work as it should to effectively strain nut milk. I do not recommend squeezing the bag either or you will get even more pulp seeping through this mesh bag. I can squeeze nearly all the moisture out of my cotton bag and there is still no pulp seeping through. I hope this review helps those that are contemplating a mesh bag versus a cotton bag for straining their nut milks. 2I wanted to like this bag and was excited to get itI wanted to like this bag and was excited to get it. And it worked great the first time, but the second time the seam busted. I make coconut milk and was squeezing the bag filled with about a half cup of coconut pulp when the pulp started oozing through the seam and a hole formed between stitches. The seam appeared to be sewn very well and the bag is sturdy, and I'm not especially strong and aggressive in how I squeeze it. But perhaps it's the nature of any bag to tear at the seam if someone is squeezing it while it has something in it??? On the other hand, so many have used this bag successfully. Perhaps mine just had a weak spot in the seam. Unfortunately I bought two and then gave one away because I decided I wouldn't need to be using more than one at a time, so I don't know how the other bag performed. I'm on the hunt now for a bag that doesn't have a seam. Something like a circular piece of fabric that opens flat but cinches up with a drawstring around the edge. One other thought on what may have gone wrong: I read that it's easier to clean the bag if you turn it inside out so that the seam is on the outside. That's true--it does make clean up easier as you don't have to try to rinse pulp from the sewn-together part of the seams. But perhaps using it this way also compromises the strength of the seam, so consider that if you use the bag inside out. 2so simpleI had no idea making almond milk was so simple. Soak raw almonds overnight, run through blender & strain through Nut-Milk bag; and, you have pure almond milk with no chemical preservatives or additives. The milk will separate after sitting, but just shake & drink. I'm sure it does that in cartons we buy, but we just don't see it; and, carton instructions always advise you shake before pouring. I turned the bag inside out, before using, as advised in several reviews I'd read, to make cleaning the bag easier, so the ground almonds don't get caught in the seams. Clean up is a breeze. I toasted the remaining ground almonds in the oven to sprinkle on desserts, etc. The next batch I simply refrigerated & added to my daily smoothies that I make in my Nutri-bullet. No waste and all healthy. 5Great buy!I have been making almond milk two times a week since 02-01-12 using this nut milk bag and it has made all the difference. Previous to purchasing this I was using cheesecloth and a strainer. I would get a couple of uses with the cheese cloth washing between each use and then it would fall apart. This has been very durable and seems to be hydrophobic so I get a much higher milk yield. I squeeze it in multiple directions and twist the bag strenuously and have never had meal seepage or a rip. Finally, the depth, width and drawstring is ideal. It fits in my standard sized mesh strainer folding over the rim and drawing sung. When I pour my pulp in it I can do so without fussing with the bag and in-turn get double filtered milk in one go. I am very happy with this purchase and would recommend it to anyone interested in making their own milks. 5Multi-purpose star, but meh for nut milkI love this nut-milk bag and use it for a lot of things in the kitchen. When I am making a large batch of loose leaf tea, I use this as a big tea bag. I make hair gel from flax seeds (Google it!) and use this to strain out the seeds. I use it to strain out the vegetables from my homemade vegetable broth. I rinse my rice in it. I have even put it in the dishwasher a few times to clean it and it has survived. I have not, however, been very impressed with it when making nut milks! Despite straining multiple times with the bag, there is still a considerable amount of grit left in the milk. Perhaps having two of these bags inside one another would do the trick, but I haven't experimented with it in that way yet.Still, I use this bag very often and have definitely gotten my money's worth, but I have not been able to successfully use it for what I bought it for. If you are interested in an easy-to-clean alternative to a mesh strainer, I recommend this. It will strain better than a mesh strainer, but still not quite good enough for a grit-free nut milk. 4I Use it in Bottling Water KefirPrior to buying this bag I tried several varieties of cheesecloth. I had to cut it to size and use 3 layers to get a fine enough filter to work for me, placed inside a strainer. It was still a less than satisfactory filter because of the work involved and the fact of not being able to reuse the cheesecloth. And, particles still made it through and into my product.I make 1 1/2 quarts of water kefir every 2 or 3 days so the nuisance factor was multiplied regularly. My next fabric was a piece of fine doubleknit fabric, like T-shirt material I had left over from a sewing project. Now that took a mighty long time to filter the liquid so I began an internet search.I read all the reviews I could find, especially because I thought I needed a smaller bag, say 4" X 5" but I went ahead and bought the Nut-Milk Bag, thinking maybe if it failed to work for my project I might try making my own nut milks, so I would keep it anyway. What a pleasure to find the right bag. I place it inside-out (so any fruit particles or smaller kefir grains don't get trapped in the seam line) into a 3-Cup glass measuring cup. Then it's easy to pour the cup full, with most of the pitcher-full. Some of the large kefir crystals (they grow from grains when they are small and new to crystals with use) fall into the bag with the liquid.I grasp the bag, lifting it to the top of the cup and wedging it between my right palm and the handle. Then it's easy to pour the liquid into bottles without getting any grains into it. Then I pour the rest of the kefir into the large cup and repeat the process, except this time all of the crystals have poured into the bag.At times I use a tiny bulk tea bag for a final filter, if my liquid is too cloudy for my taste (the grains and crystals don't have a fine taste at all). This bag is well made, with well finished seam and the top drawstring closure works perfectly. Rinsing the bag under running hot water, both right-side and inside out, is so easy. Then the bag dries in no time and it still looks like new, after 3 months of use. 5
